An update on our services this winter

Throughout the holiday season, we’ll continue to deliver services to our community although there will be some changes to be aware of. Your bin collections will follow a different schedule to your usual one over the festive period, as there will be no collections on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Day. To make sure you’re prepared, check your collection dates online: www.midsussex.gov.uk/waste-recycling/bin-collection

We know the holidays can mean there’s extra waste to dispose of during this time. To help our collection crews and the environment, here’s how you can separate your waste correctly:
• Remember to use your food bin for food waste
• Cards and paper can go in your mixed recycling bin
• Save your Christmas decorations for next year (or put them in your general waste bin)

1, 2, 3 waste collection is coming to Mid Sussex

From November, Mid Sussex is changing its waste collection service. Residents will soon have a weekly food waste collection service and bin collections will also change to a three-weekly repeating cycle.
The new collection schedule will operate along the 1,2,3 principle: every week, food waste will be collected from residents; every two weeks, recycling will be collected from blue-lidded bins; and every three weeks household waste will be collected from black-lidded bins.

In September 2024, more than 5000 residents took part in a successful trial on introducing a food waste collection service. Following the trial, the majority of participants said that they wanted to recycle food waste from now on

Households will receive two new caddies for food waste, including a 5-litre caddy for use inside the home and a 23-litre bin for outside. Residents that live in a communal building will also receive a 5-litre caddy for inside use and their communal building will also receive a 140-litre wheelie bin. Residents can expect to receive their new food waste caddies from 22 September.

From March 2026, it will be a statutory requirement for all councils to collect food waste separately from other household refuse. Introducing weekly food waste collection in Mid Sussex means that households can remove significant waste from their general rubbish bins, helping to reduce excess waste and support a more sustainable future.

Celebration for the unsung heroes of Mid Sussex

Unsung heroes were celebrated at the Mid Sussex Applauds Awards 2025 - an annual event that recognises those people who go the extra mile for their community. More than 100 people attended a special ceremony that was organised by Mid Sussex District Council and held at the South of England Showground, Ardingly. Hosted by Cllr Rodney Jackson, Chairman of Mid Sussex District Council, and the High Sheriff of West Sussex, Dr Timothy Fooks, there were 37 individuals, groups or businesses who were recognised for their contribution to the district.

These included nine winners, 10 highly commended and 18 commended nominees. Sponsors of the awards were: Community People, Glendale, Jobs Go Public, Orchards Shopping Centre, Places Leisure, City Science, MUFG and Chroma Vision. Council takes next steps to secure new cultural offer at Clair Hall

Mid Sussex District Council will go out to the market to take plans for a new cultural offer at Clair Hall to the next stage. Cabinet councillors have agreed to go out to procurement to find a cultural partner who can work with the Council to provide a three-screen cinema with a food and drink offer at Clair Hall. The aim is that the largest cinema would also be able to host and stage live performances. The Council hopes to have found an operator by the summer so that the next step to find a developer for the scheme can begin. Visit www.midsussex.gov.uk for more information.

Skate Fest is back for May half term!

Fancy brushing up on some skateboarding skills or even trying it for the first time? Then come along to one of our free community Skate Fest events during May half term. You don’t need to book, just turn up on the day at any one of three events during the school holidays. All ages are welcome. The events will be happening on: Tuesday 27th May @ St John’s Park, Burgess Hill 2 – 4.30 pm Wednesday 28th May @ Victoria Park, Haywards Heath 2 – 4.30 pm Thursday 29th May @ King George’s Field, East Grinstead 2 – 4.30 pm Cllr Anne-Marie Cooke, Cabinet Member for Communities and Communications, said: “It’s great that we’re holding these skate events again as they’re always so popular for all ages. Grab your skateboard and come and join us!”

Raising awareness of heat pumps

Heat pumps are relatively rare in residential properties in the UK – there are only around 250,000 currently. This means that the vast majority of people will never (knowingly) have seen a home with a heat pump.

Nesta, the charity that focuses on innovation including a sustainable future, wants everyone in the UK to be able to visit a heat pump near them and get the support they need.

Visit a heat pump combines a digital platform along with recruitment and training of heat pump hosts, providing a full end-to-end service for the public to visit a heat pump and get further support to help them build their confidence. So far, nearly 400 hosts are listed and Nesta is aiming for over 1,000 visits in the next few months.

Green thumbs up from Mid Sussex residents

More than 99% of Mid Sussex residents believe that recycling is important with more than 91% making an effort to recycle at home, according to a survey carried out in January by West Sussex County Council.

Of those surveyed, a majority of 51% said they were very happy with their current fortnightly collection service for general waste and recycling, batteries and small electricals.

Although 43.7% said they rarely threw items in the rubbish bin because they were unsure if they could be recycled, nearly 40% said they were sometimes unsure about what could go in their recycling bin.

Items that caused most confusion for recycling were plant pots, garden waste, shredded paper and batteries.

Councillor Chris Hobbs, Cabinet Member for Leisure and Customer Services at Mid Sussex District Council, said: “It’s fantastic, and very heartening, to see that so many of our residents support recycling. We’ve got a really helpful guide on what can, and can’t, be recycled so that we can get even more items out of the general rubbish bin and into recycling. One of the key things to remember is that everything going into the recycling bin has to be clean, dry and loose and not in a plastic bag.”

The recycling rate in Mid Sussex is already 41.8% which puts the district well on its way to hitting the Government’s national recycling target of 55% by 2035.

Urban Events mark the first steps taken in new partnership for Burgess Hill

Following the Council’s recent decision to progress the formation of a Joint Venture with NewRiver REIT plc (NewRiver), which aims to deliver the redevelopment of Martlets Shopping Centre in Burgess Hill, both parties are jointly delivering a series of activities to mark their commitment to the partnership and help enliven the school holiday and festive periods for the local community. ‘Urban Events’ is a series of free activities during October half-term and in the run up to Christmas, aimed at young people aged 8-16 to bring local people together and drive activity into the town centre. Mid Sussex libraries host free events to support Positive Ageing

This month is the first West Sussex Positive Ageing Month with a series of free events for residents offering information and advice on healthy ageing. As a joint initiative between West Sussex County Council’s Library Service and Public Health, all libraries in Mid Sussex will offer information and book displays on healthy ageing while selected libraries, including Haywards Heath and East Grinstead, will hold events. Depending on venue, these will include health and wellbeing checks, hearing tests, physical movement assessments and expert talks on maintaining wellbeing as you grow older. Planning is approved for Burgess Hill Centre for Outdoor Sport

The planning application for the new state-of-the-art Centre for Outdoor Sport in Burgess Hill has been given the green light, marking a significant milestone in the town’s sporting landscape, with works set to start this spring. Situated on an 8.6-hectare block of land within the Brookleigh development, the Centre for Outdoor Sport (CfOS) will provide first-class facilities for the district and would not have been possible without the support from Homes England. The sports mix, refined over three years through extensive engagement, consultation and data analysis, will complement the district’s existing sports infrastructure, offering a variety of sports. The development of the CfOS is one piece of the jigsaw of sports provision across the district.

We have advanced to the next stage in our District Plan making process

Mid Sussex District Council has given the green light to the latest stage of its District Plan, marking a major milestone in the plan-making process. The Regulation 19 submission draft, enhanced with key additions and protections based on community feedback, is now open for public consultation.

This achievement is the result of months of hard work and collaboration with various stakeholders, including invaluable input from local communities. Robert Eggleston, Leader of the Council, emphasised that reaching this stage has been challenging but underscores the hard work and compromises made by everyone involved.

The new District Plan aims to protect the local area while meeting the needs of the population, both now and in the future. The Mid Sussex District Plan 2021-2039 sets out a visionary framework, outlining the vision, strategy, and policy framework for the District until 2039. It also commits to essential policies and environmental protections for climate change and biodiversity in all new developments.

Hurstpierpoint & Sayers Common Parish Council Newsletter - September 2022

Community Governance Review
The outcome of the review into whether Sayers Common should have its own Parish Council will be known by the end of September. Thank you to everyone who submitted feedback to Mid Sussex District Council during the two rounds of consultation earlier this year. MSDC is planning to make the decision on 28th September and the Parish Council will announce the outcome on their website and Facebook page.

District Plan Review
Mid Sussex District Council is still working on the review of the District Plan which currently shows 3,803 homes will be built in the local area before 2038 (mainly around Sayers Common, Albourne and Goddards Green). MSDC are reviewing the policies and scoring mechanism which decide what makes an appropriate development site. It is thought the number of new homes will go up rather than down. The Parish Council is proposing a public meeting in October and will invite the representatives of MSDC to brief residents about it.
